How to Ace a Video Call Interview

In 2025, video interviews are no longer just a backup plan—they’re often the first step in most hiring processes. Whether you’re a software developer, design engineer, or lab-based scientist, chances are your next job interview will start with a videocall.
But while video interviews might feel more casual (especially if you’re in joggers below the screen), they come with their own challenges. So how do you stand out and make a great impression—without the face-to-face energy?
Here’s how to ace your next video call interview like a pro.
1. Treat it like an in-person interview
It might be online, but the expectations are the same.
Hiring managers will still be looking for:
- Technical knowledge
- Professionalism
- Communication skills
- Cultural fit
What to do:
Dress professionally (yes, even your bottom half—just in case), log in early, and be prepared with thoughtful answers and examples of your work.
2. Check your tech—before the call
Few things start a call off worse than glitchy audio or a frozen screen.
Test your setup:
- Stable internet connection
- Working camera and mic
- Proper lighting (face a window or use a lamp behind your screen)
- Quiet environment
Pro tip: Do a test call with a friend or recruiter the day before.
3. Know your CV inside out
Video interviews often feel more structured, so expect targeted questions based on your CV or project experience.
Be ready to explain:
- Specific technical tools or systems you’ve worked with
- Contributions to key projects (what you did, how, and why it mattered)
- Gaps in employment or job changes
Want to stand out? Prepare a few STAR-format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) answers in advance.
4. Engage with body language
On video, your personality has to work a bit harder. Eye contact (via the camera), nodding while listening, and smiling go a long way to show you’re engaged and confident.
Avoid:
- Looking at yourself the whole time
- Talking over people (use short pauses before replying)
5. Have smart questions ready
This shows you’re serious and interested. Good examples:
Avoid asking about salary or holiday allowances at the first stage, it’s too soon.
6. Follow up
Just because it was virtual doesn’t make it less important. Send a quick thank-you message (or ask your recruiter to pass one on) to show appreciation and reiterate your interest.
Video interviews are here to stay, but with the right prep, they’re a fantastic opportunity to showcase your skills without the commute.
