Case Study: Successful introduction of Director of Quantum Optics at Quandela, Paris

Client overview
Quandela, a Paris-based deep-tech scale-up. A global leader in quantum photonics. Renowned for developing cutting-edge quantum processors and photonic computing solutions, the company plays a critical role in Europe’s quantum ecosystem. With growing commercial and research demands, Quandela required a high-calibre Director of Quantum Optics to lead its expanding R&D team and accelerate product development.

The challenge
Hiring for such a specialised role presented several challenges. The ideal candidate needed a rare blend of academic distinction and leadership in quantum optics. In addition to deep technical expertise, the individual needed experience managing interdisciplinary teams, ability to navigate the unique pace of a scale-up, and collaborating with both government and private-sector partners. The talent pool with this combination, especially within a commutable distance of Paris or willing to relocate, was extremely limited.

Our approach
We partnered closely with Quandela’s executive leadership and HR team to define a precise brief. Beyond the technical criteria, cultural fit was critical—an entrepreneurial mindset, and collaborative leadership style.

Our executive search team initiated a global, research-led campaign. We mapped talent across academia, national laboratories, and quantum start-ups, with a focus on Europe and North America. We used a mix of direct outreach, targeted advertising, and network referrals. Candidates were assessed not only for their technical and managerial capabilities but also their strategic vision and ability to thrive in a high-growth, innovation-driven environment.

The outcome
After a thorough search, we successfully introduced Quandela to an experienced scientist, known for her work in the industry. She is a researcher and engineer in state-of-the-art photonic quantum systems on component and system level by optical modelling and experimental methods. Her position in academia involved the demonstration of prototype quantum photonic solutions for internal teams, external stakeholders and organizations.

Based in Munich, she is relocating to Paris to take up the role at Quandela, driven by the opportunity to shape the future of quantum technologies in France.

Conclusion
This project exemplifies our ability to connect pioneering technology firms with globally-minded talent. Through targeted outreach and deep sector knowledge, we helped Quandela secure a pivotal hire who will be helping to position the company at the forefront of quantum innovation.
