Construction Engineer

A world leading company in the Newport area currently require a Construction Engineer to join their team on a permanent basis. The role requires day to day management of third-party contractors and suppliers whilst working alongside the company’s Construction Project Manager to deal with front line construction activities.

The ideal Construction Engineer will have previous working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, (ideally around critical environments – i.e. hospitals, power plants, utility companies etc.). You will need to have practical experience in construction environments during build phases, from the ground up (not just the shell of a structure).

It is important that you can identify specific equipment and challenge professionally if work is not completed correctly. My client would consider someone who has been ‘on-the tools’ and is looking for that next step in their career.

We are not looking for project managers/programme managers or those who have been in a managerial role looking after multiple line reports and managing from a far. You will need to be in the thick of it and dealing with front line issues.

The role is Monday to Friday 8am-5pm, however, due to the nature of the work some flexibility will be required.


Key Responsibilities

Oversee and support the execution of construction activities/projects from conception to completion
Assist in the design and planning of future critical environments.
Drive the project programme, identify risks to the timelines and plan accordingly.
Contribute to the support of the Business Stakeholders and project delivery teams at initiation and throughout the lifecycle of programmes and projects, ensuring a common approach is adopted and sharing good practice.
Consistent application of practices and standards adhering to programme governance arrangements, including assisting in budget controls, reporting, change control.
Coordinate and direct construction workers and subcontractors as appropriate.
Liaise with suppliers in the delivery of services. Assist the Construction Director to ensure that risks, dependencies, cost and quality requirements are met by the suppliers at all times.
Meet contractual conditions of performance.
Review construction activities and ongoing works on a daily basis
Prepare internal and external reports pertaining to job status
Plan ahead to prevent problems and resolve any emerging issues
Health and safety


Experience/Skills:

5+ years’ experience in Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering and Construction of critical environments (hospitals, power stations etc.)
Strong health and safety ethos with relation to construction sites
Strong commercial acumen, financially literate and comfortable controlling cost and risk as well as making decisions
Proven track record of managing through periods of significant people, process and technology change.
Assertive and confident with a high level of personal and professional credibility.
Excellent planning and organisation skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and meet tight deadlines.

The Construction Engineer is a key role within the operations team. Expectations for this role are always high and therefore being able to manage your own workload with a can-do attitude is essential. This can be a customer facing role and you are required at all times to present a professional and helpful attitude.
