Junior Design Engineer

An international and industry leading manufacturer based in Chippenham are looking for a Junior Design Engineer to join their team. The Junior Design Engineer will be responsible for the system and complex mechanism design for complex, electromechanical products. The role will require active project management skills, the use of CAD, rapid prototyping and the application of engineering analytical and problem-solving tools to create and introduce solutions for manufacturing.

Mechanical Design Engineer responsibilities:

Mechanical design of complex systems and components
Create, develop and maintain product data through CAD (SolidWorks), SolidWorks PDM and databases
Undertake FMEA, DFM, reliability, concepts of life predictions, mean time between failure calculations, and design for experiments procedures where relevant in the product development process
Devise new approaches to design issues to obtain optimum solutions
Ensure design conformance through the acquisition of product certification requirements (UL, CE, etc.)
Perform tolerance analyses and other design techniques to ensure the form, fit, and function of parts/components and complete assemblies
Maintain follow-up documentation to report the performance of product engineering and improve product designs
Work independently with minimal supervision from initial task assignments/objectives to completion of the project
The ability to cooperate and collaborate closely with all Operations, Sourcing, Accounting, Sales, and Customer Support and Service functions of the organisation is essential to success in this role
Participate in R&D exercises
Participate in competitive analyses
Undertake any other tasks that may be required to perform the functions of the Design Engineer role
Maintain focus on continuous improvement through researching and sourcing innovative, cost-efficient business solutions and making recommendations to upper management
Ensure compliance with Co policy, business unit policy, safety and quality programme requirements. Execute to achieve key operating goals for safety, quality, on time delivery and lead time. Ensure there are management controls in place which satisfy the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley in all areas of activity
Maintain technical knowledge and understanding of products, systems and services to the highest level
Participate actively in OpEx including project team involvement, problem solving and recommending solutions to improve the quality of products, departmental and/or company-wide business activities
Assume other special activities and responsibilities as required


Experience/Skills:

2+ years’ experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer
Ideally degree educated in Mechanical Engineering (or similar)
Experience in a production led environment and experience taking products into production/through product development
Proficient with SolidWorks
BOM creation experience
Experience with sheet metal would be beneficial
Experience working with/have an understanding of electronics and software would be beneficial
Analytical and quality focused
Excellent communication and organisational skills
