DevOps Engineer

  • Location London
  • Job type Permanent

How many adverts have you seen today asking for a Cloud / DevOps Engineer? Probably a bucket load as everyone wants someone who can create an automated environment where scale is king. Not going to lie, this is a similar role but so far I haven’t mentioned ‘our market leading client’ or ‘innovation’ or anything from buzzword bingo so it’s already slightly different…

As a company, they’ve been operating for approximately 4 years and already scaled to 170 staff in London, and are now planning at taking over the US market. It’s been all go for them and they don’t see themselves setting down any time soon. As well as working with all the latest tech and (buzzword bingo!) innovation they also do some good within society so if you fancy being part of a solution for a global problem, especially now we live in the internet-age, get in touch.

About you…
You love technology, you love learning new ways to do things and would rather automate the menial daily tasks so you can work on more interesting projects. You will have a strong background across cloud, development (scripting is fine!) and infrastructure technologies and able to flit from one system to another with ease. You will be able to work well within a flat hierarchical team, be able to collaborate well with others and want to do more and more within your career; whether that’s in terms of seniority or with technology.

What you’ll be doing…
Working with like-minded individuals and building one of the most fun and secure infrastructures available. You will be part of a core team of engineers; building / evolving the infrastructure, deploy technical projects automatically with a view to scale and create monitoring solutions for the wider team. The environment is completely Linux focussed so if you aren’t a RedHat Raver, a Debian Dynamo, a Fedora fanatic then this probably isn’t for you!

What we are looking for…
We all know this is a shopping list of technologies but the more you’ve worked with, the happier you will make our client;
* Linux, Linux, Linux – not just playing around with it in your room but being able to master the OS (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian etc) within a production environment. Working with multiple systems, working with Linux based firewalls (IPTables, Ubiquiti etc) and being able to configure, deploy and maintain them constantly.
* Solid experience with scripting, it doesn’t matter the language but Python, Bash, Go, PHP are all grand.
* Commercial experience with automation tools (SaltStack, Puppet, Ansible etc), with containerisation and cluster management (Kubernetes, Docker, Mesos etc) and experience within cloud / virtual environments (AWS, OpenStack, VMware etc)
* Experience with IaC (if you don’t know, you’re probably not right!) systems such as Terraform / Cloudformation.

In an ideal world, you’ll also have experience with networking technologies (switches, routers, firewalls etc), with configuration tools (SSL, Apache, Nginx etc) and with authentication services (FreeIPA, Radius etc). If you don’t have it but you have a real core knowledge across Linux, Cloud and Automation then don’t hide in the corner, apply and be loud and proud. Our client like to help people develop so if you are a decent human, want to learn and could do that quickly then get in touch.
