A Mechanical Design and Development Engineer is required for a multi-billion pound engineering company in Hoddesdon. The role will be responsible for sustaining existing product lines, developing new products and extensions as well as implementing design and manufacturing changes. You will also ensure product safety and compliance and supporting supply chain and cost reduction projects.

Responsibilities:

• Product Development:
o Responsible for designing, validating, and bringing new products and product extensions to market, following NPD process and procedures
o Responsible for specifying precise new product functional requirements; the designs, tests and integration of components to produce final designs; and evaluation of the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety
o Responsible for the designs, development, execution and evaluation of fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans; creation and reviews of material part specifications and bills of materials
o Responsible for collaboration with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability
o Responsible for utilizing CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and production of detailed engineering drawings
o Responsible for ensuring all new products and extensions are Safe, and meet customer requirements including respective Agency requirements
o Ensure manufacturability of all new products. Interacts with designers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams, to determine the qualification and manufacturability of new technologies.

• Sustaining, Testing, Safety and Compliance Engineering:
o Provide investigation, analysis and solving of technical problems encountered by customers, engineering services, quality control, marketing, procurement and manufacturing departments.
o Produce professional reports to document and communicate the findings of investigations and testing.
o Provide guidance for test methods and procedures to simulate real product application and system conditions for verification testing.
o Provide engineering support to ensure product line is fail safe and complies with respective Agency requirements (UL, NSF, CE, RoHS, CSA, IAPMO, ABYC, etc).
o Responsible for supporting HDD product safety review process.
o Create, maintain and organize documentation required for product manufacturing, including bills of materials and engineering drawings. Preparation of ECR/ECN package based upon sustaining changes and/or release of product extensions.
o Support with tooling modifications and implement new tooling as necessary for the creation of product extensions and new products.
o Ensure proper functioning of assembly and test fixtures; provide input to the design of new assembly and test fixtures; participate in the development of the assembly process (sequence of assembly, test and inspection points), assembly/test procedures and visual instructions.
o Validation of alternate components, manufacturing processes and/or suppliers, supporting the implementation of cost reduction initiatives; and provide engineering support to reduce product and manufacturing costs (VAVE).
o Participate in Material Review Board meetings and determine use of non-conforming parts.


Qualifications:

Candidates will ideally have a:
• Degree, preferably in Engineering or in a technical area of science and research with minimum 3 years work experience
• A MS degree with minimum 1 year work experience,
• or a PhD with minimum 1 year work experience.
