UK workers shun network security - 09/03/2011

A substantial number of European workers are flouting basic security measures by accessing services insecurely when working remotely.

In a study of 300 information-based workers by IT specialists NCP engineering, 52% of Europeans admitted to the practice, with 47% of these from the UK. This was in spite of 90% agreeing that having a secure connection whilst working remotely was of the utmost importance.

Simon Ford, NCP engineering director, said that the figures show organisations are failing to take IT security seriously, calling their attitude ‘lax’.

Perhaps even more worryingly, the report also revealed that 28% of respondents would urge their employers to implement a secure network but would still access the network insecurely if they had to.

In a separate report, the statistical office of the European Union (EU) recently indicated that large numbers still surf the web without having adequate security in place. Publishing figures from 2010, its Eurostat study found that only 84% of web users were protected by security software.

In 2010, 31% of people using the internet caught a virus on their computer that directly resulted in the loss of information or time, highlighting the potential risks to individuals and businesses across the UK.
