Poorly configured networks to blame for data breaches - 02/09/2010

Incorrectly configured networks are one of the main causes of data breaches, according to security company Tufin.

Some 76% of IT professionals said that they feel poorly configured networks are to blame for security issues. More than half believed that such a problem usually stems from a lack of education of staff members.

18% said that a shortage of time or money for auditing was the key reason for poor security, while 14% said that insufficient compliance audits are often accountable.

The survey from Tufin also showed that, contrary to common belief, outsourcing security management is unlikely to have a detrimental effect on the security of a company. 58% felt that doing so would make no difference at all.

Reuven Harrison, chief technology officer at Tufin, commented:

“This disproves the commonly-held theory that the benefits of outsourcing security are cancelled out by an even greater set of risks.

“Security outsourcing has matured to the point where companies can confidently outsource parts or all of their security operations - especially when service providers offer automated tools to help with network management and configuration.”
