Bing gains ground in search market - 03/08/2010

Microsoft’s Bing has managed to steal 12.7% of the search engine market just a year on from its launch, it has been revealed.

Microsoft has continued to invest heavily in Bing since its inception, with a series of high-profile web and television advertising campaigns. Earlier this year, it was also confirmed that Bing would partner Yahoo in an agreement that would see Yahoo look after sales and Microsoft handle technology.

In spite of Bing’s progress, figures released from market research company ComScore show that Google remains dominant with 62.6% of the market, while Yahoo retains a slice of 18.9%.

Microsoft has suggested that it will be prioritising mobile strategies in a bid to take more of the market. Erik Jorgensen, Microsoft’s senior vice-president for mobile, commented:

"People drive themselves crazy trying to type on these mobile devices so the more we can understand what they are trying to do and provide an easier way to get to it through visual, voice and touch is a key insight into how mobile search is going to evolve."

Strategy Analytics recently revealed that smartphones now account for one in five mobile phones sold worldwide, indicating that mobile-based search is set to increase dramatically over the course of the year.
